Q: How to punch hook with yarn using a gripper strip frame?
A: Punching a design larger than the frame
Start the project by stretching a corner of the design. Make sure the design is
stretched straight and even. First hooking as much as possible of the outer 2
rows of the rug using 6 stitches per inch will help hold the rugs shape.
Complete all of that section of the design. Stagger the places where you stop
hooking. Staggered places will keep the rug from having a row of snipped ends
across the rug. Remove the rug from frame. You are ready to stretch and hook
the next section.
Place the hooked section on top of the grippers. Gently press the loops down
into the grippers. Stretch the design keeping it straight and in the correct
proportion. Continue hooking sections until the rug is finished.
About removing the rug from frame
The grippers are facing out and the rug loops are in the grippers under tension. Punched rugs will naturally want to roll back toward the center of the frame. Have Patience when removing loops out of the grippers.
Q: How do I remove one hooked section that is in the grippers?
A: Release the tension by lifting up the backing on the other 3 sides. Roll the rug
Q: How do you remove the rug when more than one hooked section in the grippers?
A: Start by working in a corner. Pull the rug straight out from the frame then lift up
while pulling back up over the grippers toward the center of the frame. Once a
corner is free much of the tension will be released. Work from that corner down
1 side of the frame pulling straight out lifting up and pulling back up over the
grippers. With 1 side completely out of the grippers the rest of the rug will be
easier to remove from the grippers. Remove the rest of the rug by rolling back
and pulling it out of the grippers. Have Patience.
Q: Do I need a frame cozy?
A: A frame cozy is helpful for: protecting your hands and arms, prevents yarn from snagging on the grippers.
Q: How do I remove a single loop from the grippers?
A: Use a blunt end pointy tool. Small knitting needle or tapestry needle will work well for this.
Q: Why are my loops not coming out of the grippers?
A: Make sure you are pulling straight out from the side of the frame.
Q: What do I do about fuzzy loops when I take my rug off the frame?
A: Remove fuzz by lightly trimming the tops of loops with scissors or a lint shaver.
